Listen to The Lord’s Word Christian Faith News
How well do I know God? Absence of understanding about God’s personality and what pleases Him obstructs listening.
Do I suspect that God wants to talk to me? A poor self-image is one reason we have lifeless hearing. Do I live with a sense of guilt? When we think devil’s lies about not measuring up to God’s standard, we experience fake guilt, and our listening talents reduce.
Have I been too busy to take time for God? The Lord expects us to hear Him and reply, even in our busyness. Do I think God speaks through His Holy Spirit? When we have unbelief about God speaking to us personally, we will not hear His voice.
Am I indignant with God? Over time, God-directed hate can close our heart to His words. Have I made a choice on how I need God to answer? When we have got a rebellious spirit, we close our ears to any solution but our own. How well do I receive feedback and correction? Our inclination is to reject the messenger without determining if she or he was sent by God. ( Luke 8:18a ) now would be a good time to obey.
How pleased he is’s to see your faith shine as you help folks. Your’service’ might be a pleasant smile, a provoking word, or a listening ear. In different eventualities, God may ask you to sacrifice your time or give freely of your resources. The love God gives you for others will prompt you to make a little time for them and not count the price .
As you pour yourself into loving them, you can discover a feeling of accomplishment and joy. Serving in Jesus’ name also means that you are acting in submission to His authority – to elucidate, doing things in His way and time. To live out your religion is to depend on the Lord God’s power.
Only by yielding to His control can your work yield real non earthly fruit. People will know your religion is real when your actions exalt God and not yourself. As messengers of Christ, we must serve with excellence so that God receives the glory He merits. Watch for God’s signals and be in a position to act with an enthusiasm to live out your faith.
Paul knew that staying together was the way to their survival. The enticement was tough to abandon ship and let each person fend for himself. But Paul warned that allowing the men to flee meant certain death. Our wish in awful straits is to chop and run.
It’s easier now to stroll out of a nervous marriage than to face it and work toward restoration. Man’s nature wants to retreat to a place where every one of us can be all alone, lock the door, and pull the blinds. Unfortunately some turn to alcohol, drugs, or worse, to a revolver.
If that in any way describes you, you need the support of family, chums, and particularly God’s people. Its better to lower the dinghy and jump in all alone. Instead, I counsel you to remain with others on board ship. Don’t jump and try to make it on your own. Stay in touch with folks who love you the most, who will be with you regardless of what. You would like the presence of God’s folks surrounding you when the bottom dropped out of your life.

Keys to Christian Discipleship: Learn to Listen
In order to be effective at Christian discipleship, you have to listen. Remember that listening is an active verb … a very active verb, and it takes both effort and practice. You need to listen both to your partner (the person you are discipling), and to God.
Listen to what is said. This seems obvious, but sometimes it is ignored. Listen to what is being told to you. Be willing to lay aside your own plans for the discussion if your partner brings up a topic that they obviously need to talk about. Just as your partner is not a project, your time together should not be run on a rigid agenda. Listen to what is being said to you, and respond to it directly and with your whole person.
Listen for principles. If you are discussing something going on in your partner’s life, listen for the principle that is involved and bring that principle to light. For instance, they may say that they have can’t stand having their father over for holidays. Rather than just commiserate, probe deeper: are there underlying issues of bitterness, broken trust, or forgiveness that need to be addressed?
Listen to stories and tangents. Your partner may not know how to bring up a topic that concerns them, or may be nervous about bringing it up. To compensate, they may tell you a story or go off on a seeming tangent that alludes to the topic they really want to address. Listen carefully to stories, and pay attention to tangents. They may contain the seeds of the life lesson you need to talk about.
Listen to what is not said. Finally, listen for what your partner doesn’t say. Are they avoiding some topic? Are they uncomfortable about something? Pay attention. You may be sensing an area of great need or hurt, or an area of sin that that needs to be confessed. Touch these areas very carefully, and with great prayer and sensitivity.
As you learn to listen, your skill in Christian discipleship will increase multifold – and the lives of the people you disciple will be greatly enriched.
